We have a bunch of those on file at work, I'm going to be working on a device that will hopefully help prevent more transformers from going up like that... IIRC it was a competitors product of ours that was supposed to prevent this...

What really sucks is a replacement transformers lead time is anywhere up to 4 years for a new one, yep, 4 YEARS! and they are damn expensive too!

The small ones at the tops of telephone poles look hella cool when they blow... I was at work once in Texas and we had a tornado touch down not to far from the gas station I worked at... We turned the main gas switch off and where bringing people into the store and putting them in the cooler.. Threw the glass we were watching them blow one at a time all up and down the street on both side... A loud pop then a big burst of blue sparks.. Insane...That shit was so scary the wind blew the seals on the windows {big ceiling to floor windows all along the front of the store} and rain was comin in and the windows were bowing in towards teh store luckily none of them broke !!! Insane

Normally the transformers oil tank will have a thermocouple (for reading oil temperature) for bottom and top of tank oil, you can set up devices to monitor and trip the transformer if there is a huge increase in heat, now if the breaker control is hosed, well it will not matter if the heat sensors read the transformer oil as too damn hot.. and the oil burns up...
