i bought a headset with microphone for my Windows XP, there's a place on the back of my tower that I can hook up a microphone- would it be alright to hook it into there?

i bought a headset with microphone for my Windows XP, there's a place on the back of my tower that I can hook up a microphone- would it be alright to hook it into there?
Either that or just toss it into the trash
It will either act like a microphone or a speaker depending on which jack you slip it into.
Give it a try.
