Thread: "cutting the fat"

    Lightbulb "cutting the fat"

So we talked about it in another thread not too long ago, the idea of where we can cut some fat, how to elimiate some bandwidth on MTW. Thought it would be a good idea to start a thread where people can suggest some ways to eliminate some waste.

A couple things I've come up with,

If you have never noticed, every time you reply to a thread you are added to a subscription of that thread without a choice. I looked at my subscription list and had 13 pages of it. Now this probably doesn't add up to much on my own, but with every user having a subscription to ever thread they post it's gotta add up and create a lot of completely unused pages. My suggestion, either eliminate the subscription thing, or make it so that you only subscribe to threads that you choose to do so. (a check box is how most sites I've seen do it)

Now for more than likely less popular suggestions...

Remove games in the arcade that never get played. Why keep them if the only time they've ever been played was by someone just doing so to add one more high sore?

Personally, I think the whole user profile thing can go, but maybe thats just me. I think almost everyone on here has a myspace of facebook of their own anyway, just encourage people to link it in their sigs if they really want people on here to know about them. (or if possible allow people to have a link to their personal site/myspace/facebook etc in the drop box that appears when you click on their name.) *looking right after making this initial post we already have that, so again, i see no reason to have the MTW profiles.

Also, I don't know what kind of system MTW has in place, but I'm sure we could activate a way to just delete threads after a year or whatever time morty felt best. Maybe only keeping ones like morty and mtw rambles in place. I'm sure erasing the dumping sections and "anything and everything" alone would save TONS of space.

Thats all i got for now, just thought I'd throw them out there.

    Re: "cutting the fat"

Appreciate the suggestions. They are always welcomed.

As for the Subscriptions. I'm looking in the AdminCP, and for "default registration options", its set to DO NOT SUBSCRIBE. Also checked the "UserGroup Permissions" and its not even an option in there. So I'm thinking some how you choose it in the past without realizing or some glitch along the way flipped that switch in your profile.

As for the games that are not played and the threads that are not read, they don't affect bandwidth. The fact that people READ threads affects bandwidth. But if that becomes a concern that people are reading threads, I might as well shut down the forum.

And as for the Zoints profiles, I'm not terribly thrilled with them either. I thought it would be awesome at first, but as most things around here that members have to do, it becomes forgotten quickly.

    Anyone else feel differently?

And thanks again BMan for contributing some suggestions.

    Zoints profiles...I dunno.

I mean I like them and still post stuff on mine now and then (when I get the chance) but as BMan said, most people have MySpace or facebook.

I do still get a kick off Irondog and a kiss or hug off Layni every now and then though which is always nice..

I am not automatically subscribed to any thread I reply to, I agree with morty somewhere along the way you must've chosen to do that.

The Zoints thing, is it was hard to use the profile adjuster for me at least, and I don't usually have to much trouble with that stuff. So for those that the computer doesn't flow so easily I can see it being very much a turn off of the whole thing.

Is that a polite way of saying "Nora's kneecaps are close to the ground ?"

Yep...Morty likes to remind her & lilmamma of the fact on a regular basis.

    But....

Yep. The first night I really met Nora in the Chat room her and I talked for hours about everything and one of the things she mentioned was her height. So not even really knowing her I was making jokes here and there and now its just an on going joke that I refuse to let die. Even if it is getting old.

Naaa,,,it never gets old, makin fun of short people. One of the guys at work is from Hawaii and everybody else calls heem "Five O",,,I call him "Four Nine anda Half" because he's short. Somebody accidently locked the door while they was leaving the lab one nite and I here a knock at the door later and see that it's him and go to let him in and ask,,"What's the matter little boy ? can't reach the door knob ?? "Four Nine anda Half" sounds better than "squirt" or "shorty" tho.
