| Space Shuttle
I was so looking forward to watching the shuttle launch today. I have been fascinated with the Space Shuttles since I was a kid. But todays launch was canceled. I can remember the first test of Enterprise. Enterprise was just a prototype and never went into Space. It was taken up to a very high altitude and dropped to see if it would be able to withstand the forces of re-entry. It is now on display at the Smithsonian Museum. My parents took me out of school one day and took me to Lackland AFB to see the Shuttle Columbia as it made a stop here on its way to Cape Canaveral for it's Maiden Voyage. I fell in love with the Shuttle that day . Columbia no longer exists. It broke up over the skies of Texas Febuary 1, 2003. I watched it happen. From where I live in Texas it looked like a shooting star going across the sky. It was a great distance away. Suddenly that star winked out. I had seen Shuttles re-enter over Texas before and that had never happened before. I went into my house and turned on the TV. All the news networks were reporting that NASA had lost contact with Columbia. That was when I knew something had gone terribly wrong. I can also remember being in school and all the students were taken to watch the Challenger Launch. Our Teachers were proud. Christa McCaulife was going to be the first Teacher in Space. And they wanted us to witness it. We watched in horror as the Challenger exploded in front of our eyes. I truly want the Shuttle program to go forward. It would be a dishonor to those who gave their lives for it if it were not to. They knew there was a risk and faced it anyway. Because they had the urge to explore and discover.

Bones said some thing interesting. Ya all know how it broke up coming back. Feb 1st, 2003 I was working weekend duty here (yes on my birthday that sucked) We had a fighter (F-15?) crash on the end of are runway becouse of a landing gear failer and then set the grass on fire. We lost the shuttle. Then we had to srable to launch jets because of it. Talk about one crazzy day, I'll never forget. |

I won't forget it either Shack. It broke my heart watching those people die. It shouldn't have happened. Quote:

It is sad, but when we are not trying to kill each other, we are still pretty damn good explorers/inventors... If we look at how many mishaps have occurred the safety record still appears to be damn good compared to the losses the Russians have incurred since the inception of their space program... One day we'll be out there, we're really still in our infancy in this aspect.
