Wesley Snipes Jailed For Tax Fraud

Just goes to prove that if you're a famous Hollywood star you can get away with murder...but cheat the Government out of their tax $$$'s and your ass goes to jail....

Hollywood star Wesley Snipes has been sentenced to three years in prison for tax fraud.

The star of the Blade vampire films was called before a federal court for failure to file his taxes.

In February, Snipes was acquitted of five out of eight counts - including felony fraud and conspiracy charges - which each carried up to five years in prison.

But the action star was convicted of three lesser charges of wilful failure to file income tax returns between 1999 and 2001.

US District Judge William Terrell Hodges handed down the maximum sentence available.

"I am very sorry for my mistakes and errors," Snipes told the judge. "This will never happen again."

Reading a prepared statement, he described himself as an "idealist, naive, passionate, truth-seeking, spirtual-seeking artist".

His lawyers tried to give the court three envelopes with cheques totalling $5m, but the judge and prosecutor said they could not accept them.

Snipes said he would appeal the verdict but prosecutors vowed to oppose any request to allow him to remain free on bond while the appeal is pending.

Prosecutors said Snipes had earned more than $38m since 1999 but still had not filed tax returns for the years from 1999 to 2007.

They accused Snipes of presenting himself as a victim and called the cheques a "grandstanding move" that would turn out to be only a fraction of what he owes the Internal Revenue Service.

Snipes' lawyers said he deserved only probation for his crimes, and submitted three dozen letters from friends attesting to his character.
