Synopsis: Ted Crawford (Hopkins) is a millionaire who one day discovers his wife is having an affair with a detective. More disappointed then angry, he confronts her at home and shoots her in the face, putting her in a coma. The detective who was having the affair with the wife comes to the crime scene where Crawford confronts him and tells him that he has shot his wife. He signs a confession; at the arraignment, he asserts his rights to represent himself and asks the court to move immediately to trial. The prosecutor is Willy Beachum, a hotshot who's soon to join a fancy civil-law firm, told by everyone it's an open and shut case. Crawford sees Beachum's weakness, the hairline fracture of his character: Willy's a winner. The engineer sets in motion a clockwork crime with all the objects moving in ways he predicts. Opinion: Kelly first mentioned this to me a couple of months ago and said that it looked good, and prior to that I hadn't heard of it, but we eventually watched it tonight and it was good. Anthony Hopkins, who I think is always good to watch, plays a very Hannibal Lecteresque type of character only without the cannabilism this time around, and I'm not too sure what accent he was going for, but that apart it was interesting to watch to see where the story was going to go. We all know he shot his wife..we watched him do it, the police and the DA know he shot his wife, he even admitted to shooting his wife, the tricky part then comes in proving it as the evidence starts to fall into question and the prosecution begins to fall apart, so begins a "cat and mouse" between the prosecutor (Ryan Gosling) and Ted Crawford (Hopkins). It's very much a court room kinda Movie and a lot of the story I guess is there to sort of pad the Movie out to drive it to the conclusion which does have a twist, as seems to be the case for every Movie made these days, and while it's not an amazingly brilliant twist it did keep me wondering what had happened to the gun that was used, I'll not say too much more in case anyone does want to watch it. The film does have a good cast, but I think if not for the main two actors it would be an OK, run of the mill Movie, but Hopkins & Gosling do make you want to watch...well they kept me interested any way. All in all a good crime/courtroom Movie if you like those kind of Movies, which I do, so I would certainly recommend it, but not one to rush out and spend a lot of money to watch on the big screen, probably best to wait for the DVD release, (or find a DVD quality version to download as I did).
