Post 3-Bean Turkey Chili -- Slow Cooker

I love chili. Not for its spice, but for all the other flavors in a chili. So I went to hunt out a good and simple chili for me to try for my first time. And one that didn't require me requiring a fire engine in my mouth or my butthole the next day.

Please keep in mind that this chili requires being cooked for most of the day. Nothing speedy about this one, but I felt it was really good. This one I made with ground turkey cuz I tend to always go ground turkey when possible just to eat a little healthier. I eat plenty of beef, don't get me wrong. But because I eat so much beef, I try and go for the turkey when possible. Anyway, I'm rambling. GO FIGURE!

Ingredients:
  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 1 onion, chopped ( I went for a white onion)
  • 1 can (28 ounces) diced-tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 can (15 ounces) chick-peas (garbanzo beans), rinsed and drained
  • 1 can (15 ounces) kidney beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 can (15 ounces) black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (about 4 ounces) chopped mild green chilies (If you want it spicier, go medium or hot)
  • 1-2 tablespoons chili powder (Add more if you want more spice. A little goes a long way)

Make sure you use CANNED diced-tomatoes, don't go and try to do the fresh route. This is factoring in the water content of CANNED diced-tomatoes.

Erections:
  • Cook turkey in skillet breaking it up into as fine as pieces as possible. Once you notice about half the turkey has started to brown, mix in your chopped onions with the turkey and continue to cook. Cook until fully browned. Drain and dump turkey/onion mixture into the slow cooker.
  • Dump the can of diced tomatoes and the tomato sauce into the slow cooker.
  • Dump in all the beans AFTER you have fully rinsed them. When washing, do not use a spoon or ANYTHING to stir them around to rinse them. You'll moosh them all up. Just put them in a strainer and move around under running water until the water is coming out clear on other end.
  • Mix in the canned chilies and the chili powder. Stir everything so its evenly mixed slowly to try and avoid mooshing up the beans.
  • Place the lid on the slow cooker and cook on HIGH 6-8 hours.

Serves 6-8 people easily if they don't pig out like I did. I'd recommend maybe some buttered bread to go with this chili. Or even corn bread. That would have been PERFECT!

I got impatient and hungry and had a bowl at the 6th hour but let it keep cooking for when I had another bowl at the 7th and 8th, and then again at the 9th hour. Finally turned it off after that. And it never dried out or burnt or anything so if you need to cook it for 8 hours, don't worry about it. I know sometimes when something says to go the 8 hours, it tends to dry things out. This chili should be just fine.

Pretty much depends on if Ecuador is lining up with the equator that day.

Re: 3-Bean Turkey Chili -- Slow Cooker

my friends that are over here now say it's looks pretty good, although one says that you don't put turkey in chili. I like the simpliest chili- tomato soup, kidney beans, chili beans and hamburger. I put out other ingredients for who ever is over, and they can doctor up their own chili. Works well.
