I agree that for many it would be hard to tell if they were 16 or 17, but the cases that spawned this it was by far more obvious.

The bills were introduced after Miami-Dade County officers used a stun gun on a 6-year-old boy who was wielding a piece of glass in a principal's office and on a 12-year-old girl who was playing hooky.

I think I agree that 6 year olds shouldn't be taserd.

Another bill (CS-SB 214) would allow police and correctional officers to use stun guns only on subjects who offer active physical resistance and have the apparent ability to physically threaten officers and others or on suspects who are attempting to flee or escape.

I think there needs to be more focus on straightening the little bastards at home, and I'm not going all hippy here... I just feel using a taser on a 6 year old, even if he did have glass in his hand, seems a touch extreme. (And I do mean literaly a touch, the news report failed to specificly mention, or at least I don't recall it mentioning, if the 6 year old had been branishing the glass in a manner that would truely be a danger to the cops)
I've seen too much cop corruption, and by that I mean I've only met one or two cops who were honestly on the level (and my dad was a cop for about 12 years so I met a few cops), and with that in mind I get instinctly concerned about them shocking 6 year olds with no real regulations on the subject.

What sort of pussy-aseed cops to you have in the States, that can't disarm a 6 year old, no matter what they're holding/brandishing. A good clip round the back of the head would have sorted me out when I was that age.

Next we'll be hearing about sending in SWAT teams when a McDonalds kid's party gets out of hand and becomes a 'situation'. Mind you, an unsheathed straw or coffee stirrer can be a lethal weapon if said kids have had full Ninja training!

Trying to straighten shit out with laws is something that can't be done black and white so I say "why bother"?

Cops are given the priveledge to do what they need to do and to exercise discretion and common sense when necessary. That's what we as society give to them in order to help protect us. I think it's simply a matter of finding someone qualified to do so. When you think about it, it shouldn't be too hard to find people that know when to shoot and when not to shoot, but articles like this one make me wonder.
